First of all, thank you to all of you who have stepped forward to fast, to pray, to donate, to spread the word, to invite your friends, to organize youth groups, and anything else you’ve been doing.
I have to say it is incredible to watch the FastforHaiti Campaign take on a life of it’s own. This whole thing came to fruition this past Wednesday and quickly snowballed into this idea of spreading the idea of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving for the victims, survivors, and aid workers affected by the Haiti Earthquake.
As of today - Monday morning #fastforhaiti boasts over 400 group members on Facebook, 339 cause members of our Facebook cause, over 1500 visitors to our website, about 5 pages worth of hits on google by searching “fastforhaiti”, and numbers of twitter and facebook posts.
So far I’m aware of about 10 youth groups who are organizing a “Fast”, one of which sent me some pics today of some t-shirts they made at their Life Night using the “Fastforhaiti” logo (which anyone is welcome to use to make shirts, fliers, or whatever).
I hope and pray that God continues to use this simple idea and movement to move people’s heart to fasting and prayer. We know through the Church that our fasting makes our prayer more “efficacious” - or a big word for effective. Fasting also allows us to suffer a little for those who suffer much. When we fast, we are called to prayer, that prayer in a sense joins our suffering to the suffering of Christ, in this case our prayer for those in Haiti joins our small suffering (being hungry for a few hours) with their great suffering. Joining our suffering with theirs lends to a real sense of solidarity which leads to greater compassion, and hopefully more fruitful prayer and sacrifice on their behalf
I hope and pray that in addition to being a part of this group you all will take part and pick a time and day to fast and pray and if possible donate for those in need.
So I have a few action items that I’d like to encourage you to do. Most of us get this Monday off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. I’m hoping that today you can look at this cause and consider what you are going to do personally to support and further this mission.
Requests:
1. Decide how you are going to fast, and when. Then leave a note here on our FB Group or email me, or leave it on twitter.com/fastforhaiti or even on the fastforhaiti.com site.
2. Share this facebook group or the website or the cause page with your friends. Let the world know about this call to prayer and fasting. You do not have to be Catholic to participate. Just let people know about this idea and invite them to join in.
3. I’ve posted the FastforHaiti logo on this group page… please make it your profile pick this week, either all week or maybe just on the day you fast. - you also are welcome to make an iron on tshirt with it or make fliers, signs, or whatever you’d like.
4. Organize a group fast. What if you invited your youth group, or bridge club, or campus ministry group, or office, or prayer group, bible study group, or your whole parish to take part in this fast. Pick a day and spread the word. You can find a lot of info on our site, fastforhaiti.com that will give you sufficient information to spread the word.
5. Pray. Pray for the suffering in Haiti, pray for those who are trying to serve them, pray for this movement, pray for those who fast, pray for a multiplication of the money’s donated. Pray during your fast. PRAY PRAY PRAY.
Remember that even in the darkest hours of the darkest days of our lives, in the emotional pit of despair, in the hardship of loss and tragedy - God lives, God reigns, God shines, and God loves us. Let’s enter into that beautiful love through this fast and prayer.
In Christ,
